The Dollar’s International Role Needs More Than One Measure

Reserve holdings, trade invoicing, FX turnover, cross-border payments and international borrowing measure different parts of the dollar system.

What it is

The international role of a currency is multi-dimensional. Official reserves describe portfolio holdings, trade invoicing describes contract denomination, FX turnover describes market usage, and international debt and payments describe other financial channels.

Why it matters

A change in one measure does not establish that every other dollar role changed in the same direction or by the same amount.

Example

A currency can lose some reserve-portfolio share while remaining heavily used in foreign-exchange trading, trade contracts or international finance.

Common mistake

Using one reserve, payments or FX statistic as a complete scorecard for the entire international dollar system.

What to watch

Key takeaway

Measure the dollar role that matches the question instead of treating one statistic as the whole system.
